Your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers are saddened to announce that the area will not be flooded this winter.
We, in consultation with the St. Paul Parks and Recreation Department, do not make this decision lightly. Groveland, like other outdoor / non-refrigerated rinks, have faced a myriad of challenges this season such as lack of frost in the ground (until recently) because of high temperatures. What differentiates Groveland Ice Rinks from other areas is the size of the area and the uneven topography which requires berms on the periphery to contain the water. Typically, we have overcome this landscape challenge by using snow and then icing in berms ahead of flooding to hold in (contain) the thousands and thousands of gallons water used. We understand that some of the outdoor areas in both St. Paul and Mpls (that have much less real estate and less topographical challenges than we do at Groveland) have or are in the process of trying to open with smaller footprints - - something we gave serious consideration. But, at Groveland we simply MUST have a way to contain the water - - and without snow we cannot. Your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers have explored every option available. We, as much as the skating public, want the area to be open, fully operational, skates available, and rink attendants on duty - - all the great things the community has come to enjoy. But we also recognize that we have an obligation to be responsible stewards of water resources and simply cannot justify trying to flood with no way to contain the water and knowing the weather forecast going forward indicates temperatures in the upper 30’s for at least the next two weeks. Our sincere thanks to the community for your understanding and for your recognition of how hard this decision was to make. We SO appreciate your support and are hopeful next winter will be a banner year for outdoor skating at Groveland Ice Rinks.

Hello Groveland Ice Rinks friends! THANK YOU for everyone’s patience! The fact that we have little frost in the ground and no snow creates a HUGE challenge for your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers. Did you know that the water coming out of the fire hydrant is 50+ degrees and with little or no frost in the ground it’d be like watering your lawn. Yes, the temperatures are supposed to be dropping soon, but we would still have to wait until the frost sets in a bit deeper before we can drop thousands and thousands of gallons of water and begin flooding the massive area. Additionally, there is another major challenge. Because of the topography of Groveland - - the highest spot is by the warming house and the lowest spot is by the NE corner of the property - - a drop in excess of 14 inches - - without snow (which we normally have) to build and freeze in a 12-15 inch peripheral berm (to hold the water in) - - simply put - - the water would drain to the NE and right out of the property at the corner of Prior and Sargent. It is no secret; Groveland is not alone with the challenge of building our ice rink. Even the refrigerated rinks have been struggling. Some of the outdoor areas, in both St. Paul and Mpls, that have much less real estate than we do at Groveland, are attempting to open with smaller footprints - - something we are considering. But we still need snow to create berms to hold the water in - - and even then - - it’d still take over a week to get up, running, and operational - - and that’s dependent on having continued cold temps. Remember last year? 50 degrees the first week in February? Yikes! Please know that we are working, in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department, to review and consider all options. Stay tuned to our website and Facebook pages for updates. We’re doing our best and we appreciate your patience and support.

While the ice rinks look like they are solid and skatable, the fact is that with the several days where temperatures ranged from 38 to 45 degrees with direct sunlight, the ice surface has been compromised. Coupled with almost an inch of rain, we are unable to operate equipment on the ice surface going forward. The ice sheet is literally floating on a bed of water and mud and can no longer support the weight of the equipment needed to keep the rinks groomed properly. That is why we have decided to shut down operations for this season.
No one is more disappointed than our volunteer group participants who have spent an enormous amount of time preparing the area, getting to opening day, and caring for the ice amid snow, rain, and sun. It has been one of those seasons where not a lot has gone the way we had hoped. It took us 19 days to open from first water due to the mild temps we experienced in December but for a few below zero days just before the holidays. Even though we only ended up with 26 actual skating days, thousands of people came and enjoyed the ice rinks during that period of time.
We appreciate your understanding of the situation. Unfortunately, a few colder days do not reverse the damage Mother Nature inflicted on the ice over the past two weeks. We hope you enjoyed the ice while it was open and we look forward to a longer season next winter.

Groveland Ice Rinks will officially OPEN for the season on Monday, January 3, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. Rink attendants will be on duty; skates will be available for check-out; you can have your photo taken by the Zamboni; and we'll all have a terrific time kicking off another great year of outdoor recreation at Groveland!
UNTIL THEN, your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers ask that the public REMAIN OUT OF THE AREA so additional flooding and ice maintenance can be done. There are still several extremely vulnerable areas that need work - but with the cold temps this weekend (and, if our request to stay out of the area is honored and our work does not get damaged), they'll be ready to go by Monday; safety nets will be affixed to the end boards of the hockey rinks; benches will be moved outside; and, all the necessary finishing touches will be done to prepare the area for opening.
We look forward to welcoming everyone on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
The Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers want to extend our thanks to Mayor Carter for his extremely kind words of appreciation for the work we do. "The outdoor ice here is absolutely amazing" he said! "My family and I will be back soon!"

Just a quick update from your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers!
We want to extend our sincere appreciation to the many members of the community who have shared such genuinely kind words on our Facebook page - - as well as those who have been intentional and have stopped by (while we're out flooding) to say hello and thank us. Know that we are grateful.
Opening day is still up in the air. Oh, we've made a lot of progress in less than a week - - but there's more work and flooding to do before the area will be ready and have ice that is safe to skate on.
As was mentioned in a prior post, until the rinks officially open (stay tuned to our web page www.grovelandicerinks.org and Facebook page) we ask the community to remain out of the area so as not to ruin the hard work and progress we make each day. Skating on the ice (and breaking through) sets us back; repairs have to be done; and, ultimately the official opening will be delayed.
Thanks to all for honoring our request - - we're counting on you.
Planning ahead -
The warming house will be closed for the entire 2020-2021 skating season; your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers have constructed a skate changing area with some wind breaks on the east side of the building; a porto-pottie is located on the southeast corner of the property; your friendly rink attendants will be on duty; and, like always, there will be free skates and skate trainers available (check-out / check-in basis with collateral).
With COVID come minor changes in the way the area will operate - - but what remains the same is this - - your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers are 100% committed to making sure the community has the BEST outdoor ice in St. Paul.

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday a high of about 45 degrees; rain in the afternoon; blizzard conditions through the night; and about 5-6 inches of fresh snow this morning. Your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers were up and at 'em - hard at work by 6:00 a.m. this cold and windy morning. The snow was cleared and an initial flood was done. We covered a lot of ground (literally) today!
Lot's of inquiries as to when we will officially open. Hard to know - - but the weather conditions look favorable for flooding - - so it won't be too long.

Click photo album to see volunteers in action
If you have driven or walked by the Groveland Recreation Center recently you’ve probably noticed a lot of activity. Many enthusiastic volunteers have donned their work clothes to give the warming house a fresh coat of paint.
Matt Swanson, neighbor and 4th generation owner/operator of Swanson Painting and Wall Covering, LLC, managed the all-volunteer project. Joining Matt was his wife Renee, together with their children Adam and Clare. Matt’s business, a 100-year-old hallmark serving St. Paul and Illinois, contributed all the necessary painting equipment. Completing the supply list were our friends at Abbott Paint and Carpet, a family-owned business serving St. Paul for over 75 years, who donated all the premier exterior paint.
When the finishing touches were completed, the Swanson family, several neighbors, Andy Rodriguez and Eric Thompson of St. Paul Parks Recreation Services, and your Groveland Ice Rinks’ volunteers teamed up to log nearly 250 hours of service. Matt put it best when he said, “It’s a privilege for my family and me to be able to give back to the community. Working with the volunteers and seeing the passion everyone has in making Groveland such an awesome ‘gem’ of the community has been a great experience.”
Your Groveland Ice Rinks’ volunteers want to extend a heartfelt thanks to Matt, his family, Abbott Paint and Carpet and our friends at the St. Paul Parks and Recreation Center for their support in helping to make Groveland such a great place. Winter is just around the corner and your Groveland Ice Rinks’ volunteers are excited to flood the rinks and create another fun season for the community.

Over the last couple weeks your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers have been busy at work sanding, prepping and painting the side boards for the two hockey rinks that you see at the area each winter. If you drive by Groveland, you’ll notice them set up on the north east corner of the field. Many have asked “why are they set up the way they are? Interesting pattern!” Truth be told, we set them up that way for the ease of the person spraying the prime and finish coats of paint. After the paint has a few days to cure the boards will be taken down - - but it won’t be long and you’ll see them set back up again in the center of the field and we'll be preparing the area for flooding. Wow! Time flies - - doesn’t it? The Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers want to extend our sincere appreciation for the many people walking by who stopped to check in on us and who extended such genuinely warm words of kindness and thanks. We can’t tell you how much that means - - we are so grateful for your support of the work we do. Do stay tuned for upcoming messages on our Facebook page and our website (www.grovelandicerinks.org) because if you’d like to join in the volunteer effort - - we’ll soon need help with the fall clean up of the area (raking leaves, picking up sticks and trash, etc.). Until then - - enjoy our beautiful fall.

Your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers gathered, a week ago Saturday, to take down the hockey end boards. The boards are now in storage (right next to the Zamboni) for the summer. Both ball fields were dragged and the area is in great shape!
The side boards for each of the two hockey rinks at Groveland belong to the City of Saint Paul. All the end boards, however, are property of the Groveland Ice Rink Volunteer organization. Having curved / rounded end boards makes it possible for use of a Zamboni - - which as everyone knows is a game changer - - and one of the many reasons Groveland Ice Rinks is recognized as having the best maintained outdoor ice in St. Paul.

On January 17-19, 2020, “Hockey Day Minnesota 2020” weekend, Groveland Ice Rinks hosted the inaugural 4 The Love Of Puck “Playground Puck Tournament.”
This co-ed friendly tournament featured great hockey, an awesome chili contest, and probably the most challenging weather conditions of the winter - - rain, sleet, almost 8 inches of snow, high winds, and below zero wind chills - - all in the period of three days!
Despite the weather challenges - - a fantastic time was had by participants, from all walks of life, who have a passion for the game of hockey. One of the players said, “What do you mean bad weather? This is Minnesota. This is outdoor hockey. This is part of the experience. This will be what creates memories.”
Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers extend a heartfelt thanks to Adam, Cas, and Joe - - life-long hockey players and friends, for the opportunity to plan and coordinate what proved to be a wonderful weekend.
Following the tournament, “4 The Love Of Puck” presented the volunteers with a cash donation which will be used to help defray annual expenses which include: Zamboni maintenance and blade sharpening, Bobcat maintenance, hockey rink end-board and safety screen repair and replacement, skate sharpening, skate trainers / repair, fuel and related costs for the plow truck, flooding hoses maintenance and repair, safety equipment / ice spikes for volunteers and more.
THANK YOU – 4 The Love Of Puck - for your enthusiastic support in helping promote the wonderful “gem” we’ve all come to know and enjoy - - Groveland Ice Rinks!

If you drove by Groveland Recreation Center today you saw some changes taking place. The baseball fields were transformed into the beginnings of an ice skating park. The morning began at 10:30 a.m. and by 2:00 p.m. all 48 end-boards for the two hockey rinks were in place and the entire area was raked and cleared of leaves.
Groveland Ice Rinks (the volunteer organization that maintains the ice) would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the many members of the University of St. Thomas Men's Club Hockey Team who helped with the set-up. Wow, what a great group of enthusiastic and hard working guys! Additionally, we want to say how much we appreciate the area families (moms, dads, and their children) who volunteered and gave of their time, too!
Did you know? The wooden side boards are the property of the City of St. Paul but the fiberglass end boards have been designed, built and donated by the Groveland Ice Rink volunteers. The boards are in tip top shape and contribute to Groveland Recreation Center having one of the best outdoor skating rinks / experiences in the Twin Cities!

Your Groveland Ice Rinks Volunteers gathered on an absolutely beautiful Saturday morning to take down the end boards. Within two hours the boards were in storage (right next to the Zamboni) for the summer. The northwest ball field was dragged and is in pretty good shape - - all that remains is a bit of frost in the ground around the pitcher's mound. Unfortunately (because of less direct sunlight), the southeast field has several large areas where frost still remains in the ground - - there's standing water - - and, we cannot drive equipment on it. But, a few more warm days and we'll be in good shape. The field will be restored, dragged, and ready for spring ball!
EVERYONE'S HELP NEEDED!
Most pet owners who bring their dogs to Groveland abide and respect the city ordinance of having their pet on leash and clean up. Unfortunately, there are those who are genuinely inconsiderate, rude, and disrespectful - - they choose not to obey the civil and legal duties as a dog owner - - and don't clean up after their dog!
The next time you head down to Groveland for a walk - - or with your kids to play - - consider taking a few plastic bags with you - - and let's together, all of us, help keep the area clean of the messes left by irresponsible pet owner's dogs and those who litter.
Much appreciated!

Groveland Ice Rinks Receives Donation
The First Annual McLeod Outdoor 3 v 3 Pond Hockey Tournament was held on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Groveland Ice Rinks.
Photos / Video (click on the link)
The temperature was perfect, the ice was great, the teams were awesome, the competition was tough, the laughs were a plenty, and a fantastic time was had by all.
Five teams of four played in the event. Teams were comprised of former players of the Highland Central Hockey Association (now the Saint Paul Capitals) and surrounding high schools (Highland, Cretin, Holy Angels, and Apple Valley). The tournament champions were the 3rd Line Grinders from Apple Valley.
In addition to great pond hockey there was a special treat - - South Side Sliders! What’s a South Side Slider? It’s one of the best small steam-grilled hamburgers you’ve ever had – and homemade by two hockey moms from the area. They were a hit!
"For years, McLeod says, Groveland Ice Rinks, the partnership of Groveland Recreation Center / Groveland Booster Club, has provided neighborhood youth the opportunity to perfect their skills, to make memories with their friends, and to play the game that they love, hockey. If you ask any Minnesota native playing in the NHL, they will tell you their fondest memories are those made playing the game they love outdoors.
So, my purpose in hosting this event was to raise funds to be donated to the area in support of the work they do in making such a magnificent community outdoor ice area available to the public. Not only does Groveland have, what many consider, the best outdoor ice in the Twin Cities - - Groveland makes available skating trainers (for those learning how to skate), hockey sticks / pucks, and most important, an array of donated hockey (and figure) skates for all to use at no cost on a check-out / check-in basis.
I want to extend my sincere thanks to Koami DaCruz, Groveland Recreation Center; Patti Schwartz, Community Recreation Director of Programming; and, to John Hoeschen and members of the Groveland Ice Rinks Booster Club for the work they do and for making the event possible.
My hope, says McLeod, is for the tournament to become an annual event.”
McLeod presented donation checks totaling $1,000.00 to the Groveland Booster Club.

The First Annual McLeod Outdoor 3 v 3 Pond Hockey Tournament will take place on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at Groveland Ice Rinks.
According to tournament organizer, George McLeod, perhaps Bobby Orr, the greatest NHL defensive player to play the game of hockey said it best, “I couldn’t wait to get on the ice. I couldn’t wait to get to practice. As a kid, I couldn’t wait to shoot pucks or play in parking lots, or play on the river or play on the bay.”
"For years, McLeod says, Groveland Ice Rinks has provided neighborhood youth the opportunity to perfect their skills, to make memories with their friends, and to play the game that they love, hockey. If you ask any Minnesota native playing in the NHL, they will tell you their fondest memories are those made playing the game they love outdoors. But, there are barriers to the game of hockey. It’s no secret, hockey is an expensive sports and the financial burden of paying for the equipment is preventing many youth from playing this fantastic game.
So, my purpose in hosting this event is to raise funds (team entry fees) that will be donated to Groveland Recreational Center so they can purchase some hockey equipment for use by kids."
Groveland Ice Rinks and Recreation Center commends George on this endeavor and for his generous spirit in giving back to the community.
If you have a moment, stop by the rinks on Saturday, the 12th, between 10:00 a.m - 9:00 p.m. to enjoy some great 3 v 3 hockey - - say hello to George - - and if you'd like - - make a donation.

If you drove by Groveland today you saw some changes taking place. The baseball fields were transformed into the beginnings of an ice skating park. The morning began at 9:00 a.m. with a hot cup of coffee | donut holes and by lunchtime all 48 end-boards for the two hockey rinks were in place. Later this week all the wooden side boards for the two rinks are slated to be put in place.
The Groveland Booster Club would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to members of the University of St. Thomas Men's Club Hockey Team for all their help. Wow, what a great group of enthusiastic and hard working guys!
Did you know? The wooden side boards are the property of the City of St. Paul but the fiberglass end boards have been designed, built and donated by the Groveland Booster Club. The boards are in tip top shape and contribute to Groveland Ice Rinks being one of the best outdoor skating rinks / experiences in the Twin Cities!

Congratulations to Rink Rat Award Winner, Jack Skoglund!
A new program was created at Groveland Ice Rinks for the 2017-18 skating season entitled, “Rink Rats.” A Rink Rat, as defined by the program, is an individual, of any age, who absolutely loves being at Groveland Ice Rinks enjoying the outdoor activity of ice skating and / or playing hockey. A punch card is kept on file and participants not only receive the benefit of a positive outdoor experience – they receive a t-shirt after acquiring 15 punches.
Not only did Jack obtain the required 15 punches - - he more than doubled that number. 31!
Jack, age 8, and a third grader, began skating in earnest in November 2017 (about a month before Groveland Ice Rinks opened this season). Oh, he had tried the sport a few times the year before but not until this past fall did he really make the commitment. So, he and his dad, Eric, headed to the Loring Park Rink (Loring Park has a refrigerated rink) and he remembers falling, more falling, and even more falling. But, he was determined, didn’t give it up, and soon was experimenting with a hockey stick, and a puck. You guessed - - Jack was hooked!
Fast forward to late December 2017 (Groveland Ice Rinks are now open)…
Jack’s dad, Eric, has been playing broom ball since he was in junior high school at Minnehaha Academy. Eric, and a group of friends, play broom ball together at Groveland Ice Rinks every Saturday morning. They’ve been together for well over 10 years. Eric decided to bring Jack to Groveland for his first time. Upon their arrival, Jack couldn’t believe it! “Wow, this place is huge! That big circle they call the “oval” is really cool! It’s amazing.” By the third day, Jack had a Rink Rat Punch Card on file in the warming house and was working toward his 15 punches.
“Jack was like my personal trainer always encouraging me to go to the rinks and skate. The exercise was awesome. Equally important, the new friends and connections we both made at Groveland Ice Rinks have been amazing. And, the opportunity to spend quality time (skating 50+ times this season) with your child is something that is truly, truly special!”
The words, “five more minutes, dad” became commonplace when it was time to leave Groveland Ice Rinks. Even on those cold, windy and sometimes even nasty winter evenings, Jack always wanted to stay longer and continue the fun of skating and spending time with his new friends.
“The Rink Rat Program was a real spark and an encouraging motivator for my son.”
“We are humbled and grateful to all at Groveland Ice Rinks who make experiences like we’ve had a possibility.”

Groveland Ice Volunteers would like to extend a word of thanks to the four skaters (pictured here) for their help shoveling snow over the boards during today's snow storm!
When the snow got just too deep to play hockey - - they began playing Bandy.
Ever heard of Bandy? Bandy is a team winter sport played on ice, in which skaters use sticks to direct a ball (instead of a puck) into the opposing team's goal.

Groveland Booster Club Volunteers spent the early morning hours of Christmas Eve day repairing significant damage done to the ice by individuals who chose to ignore the RINKS CLOSED sign. We ask the community to help us in keeping skaters off the ice until the opening day - - which is Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. Volunteers work so hard to provide what residents of the neighborhood have come to know as the best outdoor ice in St. Paul. Unfortunately, because of a few, the work volunteers have done in the past few days to prepare the ice has gone wasted.

Last week was a busy week at Groveland and if you drove by the park you saw many changes. The baseball fields were transformed into the beginnings of an ice skating park. On Wedneday, all the wooden side boards for the two hockey rinks were put in place and on Saturday, eight community volunteers (Groveland Booster Club) put up the 48 end boards. The morning began at 9:30 a.m. with a hot cup of coffee and by just after lunchtime all the boards for both hockey rinks were in place. A heartfelt thanks to all who volunteered their time.
Did you know that the wooden side boards are the property of the City of St. Paul but the fiberglass end boards have been designed, built and donated by the Groveland Booster Club. In the last three years all the end boards have been replaced, are in tip top shape, and contribute to Groveland Ice Rinks being one of the best outdoor skating rinks / experiences in the Twin Cities!
